POWDER, MARK: Age 69, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Thursday, October 18, 2018. He was born in Staten Island, NY, to the late Beulah and Joseph Powder and was the younger of two children. As a child, Mark exhibited exceptional aptitude in mathematics and was accepted to Stuyvesant High School, the prestigious specialized college preparatory school in Manhattan, traveling to and from daily by ferry boat and subway. After high school, he attended Carnegie Mellon University, graduating with a degree in civil engineering. A Pittsburgh convert, he remained in the city and became a prominent member of the bicycling and arts communities. He was one of the founding members of the Allegheny Cycling Association, officiating numerous races for over 20 years. Also a talented leatherworker, he served on the committee of Fair in the Park and volunteered at the event every year since the early 1970s. Mark worked at CH2M Hill firm for 30+ years, where he was a highly respected and valued senior engineer and project manager. He retired in 2016 after an amazing career working on numerous landmark steel and aluminum plant design projects in the US and worldwide. He was known for his high degree of integrity, genius mind, kindness and honesty; clients and co-workers alike loved working with him. Since retiring in 2016, Mark volunteered as a docent with the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Society, giving walking tours of various sites downtown and in the Strip District. Mark was also an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and music lover, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of both. Mark is survived by his sister Geri Powder of Fort Lee, NJ, cousin Constance Rapp of Pittsburgh, and many who knew him as a great friend with a big heart. He never hesitated to help those in need.
