Green burial, also known as natural burial, is defined as the interment of the deceased in a manner that does not inhibit decomposition, but allows the body to be naturally recycled. This includes no embalming, the use of a plain, all-wood casket, and no burial vault (if permitted by the cemetery).
Before the term ‘green burial’ was coined, Jews around the world were practicing it. In our over 100 years of service to the Greater Pittsburgh Jewish community, we have practiced sustainable and dignified burial practices, without the use of toxic materials and chemicals.
