DR. AL K. DEROY: Age 78, passed away on October 14, 2026, at his home, with his beloved wife, Darlene, at his side. He was the son of the late Ralph and Patricia DeRoy of the DeRoy Jewelry Family.

After graduating from Churchill Area High School, Al earned a bachelor's degree from Franklin & Marshall College, followed by a PhD and several master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to enjoy a long career in the Provost's Office at Pitt, where he served until his retirement.

In retirement, Al devoted substantial time, energy, financial resources, and expertise to countless charitable organizations. Among those closest to his heart was Strength, an organization that assists individuals overcoming drug addiction, as well as numerous animal welfare groups.

Al's deep love for animals led him to adopt numerous cats and ultimately inspired him to become a committed vegan. His compassion extended to people as well. He was thoughtful and generous toward his friends, always looking for ways to help, offer support, or make a difference in their lives.

Al is survived by his sister, Diane (Harley) Michelson, his nephew, Aaron, and his niece, Rachel.

Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 11 AM. Visitation one hour prior to service (10 AM - 11 AM). Interment West View Cemetery.
