My condolences go out to the entire family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I grew up in Uniontown and the Gottfried residence was around the corner from my house. I was a member of the Uniontown Tree of Life Synagogue. I very well remember little Dicky and his smile. He will be in the hearts of everyone who has known him.

We in the Montreal Jewish community stand with you during this very difficult time. On Monday of this week, more than one-thousand Jews stood shoulder to shoulder with you in our local temple condemning hatred and anti semitism in all forms. L’Chaim!! Buruch Dayan Emet.

Our sincere condolences to Peg, Debbie, Bonnie, Carol, and all of Dick’s beloved family. We are so grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Seder that he lead last year. Witnessing Dick’s passion for and personal connection to the ceremonial meal was truly impactful. He was a man of such strong faith, love, and caring for all. Our hearts and prayers are with you all as you celebrate Dick’s life and how he touched the spirit of all who knew him.

So very sorry for your loss. Words are never sufficient enough to lessen the pain you feel from such a hate-filled and cowardly act of violence perpetrated on your loved one. I hope and pray that in the days, weeks, and months ahead, the family can find a measure of comfort and peace in God’s promise of a resurrection. Isaiah 26:19.

Dear Peg, Family, and Friends, I am saddened by your loss and send my heartfelt condolences. Dr. Gottfried will, without doubt, be missed. His enthusiasm, happy smile, philanthropy, and volunteer spirit leave a legacy that will endure. Please cherish your good memories and focus on them, and may they provide solace. God is close to the brokenhearted and those crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18, 19). He is for you a safe place and strength; a help that is readily found in times of pain and distress. He will comfort you and give you the courage and strength to cope. May he comfort your broken hearts.

Though I have not seen 'Dicky' since 1973 when I graduated from undergrad at Pitt, I have reflected recently on our time together sharing fun and laughter as we became great pinochle buddies with fellow friends Helene, Cindy, and Pat. I was very saddened and shocked to see Dicky's name among the victims at Tree of Life. My condolences to you all, and I am sure that everyone from our Uniontown community recalls Dicky and your entire family. May his memory be a blessing.

May you find peace and comfort during this difficult time. Was a friend of Richard’s during his junior and senior undergraduate years at Pitt. To this day, I remember the many conversations we had regarding politics while playing epic canasta tournaments in my dorm room.

The memory of Richard\'s warmth and smile will be in my heart forever. My heart is with you now.

Dr. Richard Gottfried was a good and holy man. I knew him well. He wore his devout faith like a badge of honor. His compassion for his fellow man was well known, not only as a volunteer at Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center but as a compassionate dentist at Squirrel Hill Health care Center, where he and his wife Margaret served the immigrant and under-served population of the Pittsburgh area. He served our Heavenly Father (El Shaddai. El Elyon) in many ways, not the least of these was by serving his fellow man by providing access to care to those who often times fall through the cracks of traditional health care services. At 65 years of age his awesome life was cut short by a gunman at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill early yesterday. He will be missed more than words can say.

Cindy and I send our prayers for Peg and all of her and Rich’s family and friends. I was blessed to have known Rich for 30 years. We talked, golfed, ate together. Every week, Peg, Rich and I shared a Marriage Encounter dialogue question and discussion. We made a presentation at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Oakmont on The Passion of the Christ. His rabbi taught an adult education class at our church. This led to me presenting a class on Catholic-Jewish relations at New Light Congregation. He and Peg invited me to their home for dinner, Sabbath and Passover celebrations. A wonderful transcendent man.
