KATZ, MARSHALL P.; On Tuesday July 18, 2017. Marshall P. Katz grew up in his family founded business, Papercraft Corporation, a nationally known maker of household consumer products, where he worked for 28 years becoming its chief executive in 1982. The company’s principal brands included Ty-d-bol toilet bowl cleaner, Esquire shoe polish, Mountain Tree artificial Christmas trees, Papercraft giftwrap, and LePage’s tapes and adhesives. Upon retirement in 1989, he devoted his energies to the cultural arts serving on the boards of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Pittsburgh Opera, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Additionally, Mr. Katz over the years served on the boards of the United Jewish Federation, the National Joint Distribution Committee, Montefiore Hospital, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, the Katz Graduate School of Business (University of Pittsburgh), and the United Way among others. In 1999 he helped fund, along with his sister Andrea McCutcheon, the Agnes R. Katz Plaza, an art park located in downtown Pittsburgh in memory of their mother. Mr. Katz’s philanthropy was principally Pittsburgh-oriented embracing areas in education, healthcare, religion, the performing and visual arts, and other civic and community efforts. He was an ardent collector of modern and contemporary art, and often hosted visiting groups to view his collections which also included many decorative and fine art objects. His collection of 19th century Palissy ceramics is considered the finest of its kind. He also authored three books on Palissy ware, and more than 25 magazine articles. The French and Portuguese Palissy ware books are still regarded as the standard reference works in the field. Mr. Katz had many interests including fine wines, travel, and cooking. He collected wines for more than 30 years, often moderated local wine tastings, and organized domestic and international wine tours. He traveled to Europe frequently, especially France, to visit the vineyards. His wife and he often cooked at home for friends, and attended cooking classes together. Born in Pittsburgh, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 from Cornell University, and later performed military duty in the United States Coast Guard. Mr. Katz is survived by his wife Wallis whom he married in 1965; a daughter, Lauren S. Katz; and a sister, Andrea McCutcheon.
