KAPLAN, RUTH: Of Reston, VA died on Saturday, February 10, 2018. Born in Vienna, Austria on January 9, 1927, Mrs. Kaplan immigrated to the United States with her mother in 1939. She attended Hunter High School and went on to Hunter College where she graduated in 1948. She is most proud of college experiences associated with creating the annual SING program at Hunter College. She attended graduate school at Columbia University where she received her Master of Social Work in 1950. She met her future husband as a camp counselor for disadvantaged youth and after graduation from Columbia, she married Rabbi Solomon M. Kaplan. They spent the majority of their marriage in Pittsburgh, PA where Mrs. Kaplan worked in a variety of social work positions that supported services for people with intellectual development disabilities and the frail elderly. Mrs. Kaplan was also active at Tree of Life Synagogue. Rabbi Kaplan passed away in 1982. Mrs. Kaplan retired in 1987 and moved to Reston in the early 1990s. She led an active life in Reston, participating in book clubs, exercise classes, and senior learning programs. She loved to travel and particularly enjoyed her Elderhostel adventures. Mrs. Kaplan is survived by her children:  Steven Kaplan and his wife, Albert (Owens) Kaplan of North Carolina, Eva Kaplan of Virginia, and Judy Sakowitz and her husband, Michael Sakowitz of Northern Virginia. Mrs. Kaplan is also survived by her grandchildren: Yona Kaplan and her husband Danny Zalkind, Shlomo Kaplan and his wife Michal Luft, Julia Sakowitz and Emily Sakowitz. In addition, Mrs Kaplan has five great-grandchildren, Noam, Stav, Yuval, La’vonte, and Asaph. Graveside Services and Interment will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 1 PM at Tree of Life Memorial Park. Shiva will be held in Northern Virginia on Wednesday.
