LEFKOWITZ, FRANCINE K.  When it was said, “God couldn’t be everywhere so he created mothers”, they were thinking of Fran. On Friday, February 1, 2019, she passed comfortably after a brief illness. Survived by her husband of 63 years, Alan Z. Lefkowitz of Pittsburgh PA; three adoring children, Curtis R. (Kelly) Lefkowitz of Los Angeles CA, Gail A. Lefkowitz of Pittsburgh PA, and David E. Lefkowitz of Los Angeles CA; and her brother R. Edward Kaplan (Audrey) of Palm Beach Gardens Florida. Family was everything to her. Her nephews, Michael D. Kaplan (Elle) of Denville NJ and Kenneth A. Kaplan (Ellen), called her Aunt Frankie, but you didn’t need to be her relative to call her that.  Many of her children’s childhood friends remained in her life until the last.  She also “adopted” a couple of surrogate grandchildren along the way to add to the 3 grandchildren who carry her last name, Sidoine P. Tournissac-Lefkowitz, Maylis L. Tournissac-Lefkowitz, and Rebecca R. Lefkowitz.  Burial and interment are private.  A memorial service will be held at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Avenue (at Morewood), on Sunday, February 3, 2019, at 2 PM, reception to follow, all are welcome.  Shiva Monday, February 4, and Tuesday, February 5, from 6 PM - 8 PM at the Temple. Contributions in Fran's name may be made to the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, 201 N. Bellefield Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, or to Rodef Shalom Congregation, 4905 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.  Arrangements entrusted to Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., www.schugar.com

I am sorry to hear of Fran's passing last Friday. She was a "mom" to many of us, always offering food & sage advice. I especially loved her stories about the trips to Canada she and Alan would take to see the summer Shakespeare festival. A gracious lady has left us, but hopefully her example will inspire us to be better individuals in the future.
