SYLVIA NEWMAN: From Glassport and White Oak passed peacefully at age 93 on Tuesday, November 22, 2022. She was born on May 25, 1929 to her parents, the late Myer and Rose Alpern. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh receiving a degree in education. She taught at Greenfield, Roosevelt, and Minadeo elementary schools in Pittsburgh for several years until taking time to raise her children. She returned to teaching at Community Day School in 1981 where she touched and influenced the lives of numerous students. Besides teaching, she enjoyed cooking and baking and hosting her family for every holiday. She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Gelman Kelley (Daniel) of Baltimore, son Bruce S. Gelman (Dana) of Pittsburgh; grandchildren Benjamin Kelley, Robert Kelley, Brandt Gelman, Phillip Gelman and Tobyn Gelman and great grandchildren Maya, Hannah, Merrick and Marlo and her sister, Rochelle Glanz. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Boris A. Gelman, her husband Marvin B. Newman, her stepmother Leah Alpern, and her sister Rae Kessler. Special thanks you to all her caregivers that took such good care of her. Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside on Friday, November 25 at 12 Noon. Visitation one hour prior to services (11 AM - 12 Noon). Interment Temple B’nai Israel Cemetery in Versailles, PA. Very sorry for your loss.Sylvia was a gem.I was a former neighbor of her at Riverview Towers.I will miss her dearly.I lit a memorial candle for her and said the mourners prayer in Hebrew for her blessed memory.

Mrs Gelman was my first grade teacher at Minadeo. I liked her a great deal. I'm sorry to see that she passed away but grateful that she had so much family and wonderful caregivers. May her memory be for a blessing

Oh my. My cousins Margie Robbins best friend for many years. They taught together worked together went out together traveled together and were friends always. A very nice lady. Rest in piece Sylvia. You will be missed
