Jean « Edie » Engel passed away peacefully on February 20 shortly after celebrating her 100th birthday with four generations of her family and treasured friends in attendance. A beloved wife and mother, she was preceded in death by her first husband Phillip Lynch, a navigator killed in battle in World War II. Her second husband Robert Engel, a respected member of the legal fraternity, and their son David Engel also predeceased her. She is survived by her son Phillip Lynch Jr., devoted daughter-in-law Lila, granddaughter Maggie Sterling (Craig) and two great grandsons as well as niece Ellen Retting (Dan) and cousins Dick and Susan Nernberg. Her final years were facilitated and enriched by a close bond with her aide, Kathleen Jackson.

A lifelong Pittsburgh resident, Edie graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School and studied at the University of Michigan prior to her first marriage. She devoted time to many civic organizations including the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Council of Jewish Women and the Heart Association. She enjoyed collecting from local artists and while on European travels. An accomplished cook, she loved to entertain family and friends in her home. Known by all for her extraordinary warmth, kindness and grace, she will be greatly missed. Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside, on Thursday, February 26 at 12:30 PM.
