DONALD MORITZ: Surrounded by his loving family, Donald Moritz passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at the age of 98. Don was born in McKeesport, PA on October 23,1927. He was the son of the late Maurice and Rose Moritz (Klein) and brother of the late Shirle Goldstone and Norman Moritz.
Don attended McKeesport High School, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and went on to graduate from Pitt Law School in 1951. He married Janet Papernick the following year and they continued holding hands for the next 74 wonderful years.
Don spent his career with Equitable Gas Company, beginning in the law department and ending as Chairman and CEO for 16 years before retiring. He led the company's transition from a local utility to the natural gas exploration and distribution now known as EQT.
The Pittsburgh Symphony and the Jewish Agency on Aging benefitted from his leadership as their board President. He also dedicated his time to the boards of other non-profits including Carnegie Mellon University, Seton Hill College, Montefiore Hospital and UPMC.
As a lifelong devoted Pitt fan, Don spent many happy (and unhappy) Saturday afternoons at Pitt football games and many hours watching whatever Pitt sport was being televised at the time. He was a lover of history, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and traveling the world with Janet and his family. Nothing made him happier than sharing life with his wife, children and grandchildren. His impact on their lives will be cherished forever.
Don is survived by his wife Janet (Papernick), children Paula Spock (Robert), Laurie Moritz, J. Kenneth Moritz (Natalie) and grandchildren Elizabeth, Ben, Addie, Ian, Paige and Sophie.

I am sorry to hear of Don’s passing.
It’s been many years since I’ve seen Don, Janet and your family, but I have great memories growing up with you all in White Oak. Our parents were great friends. We even lived in your former Summit Street house in 70s and 80s! I miss those days and I will miss Don. May his memory be a blessing.
My love to you all.

Dear Moritz family,
I am so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. Although I was the youngest in my family and don’t have as many memories of all the family gatherings, I have always remembered Don as such an important part of my parents’ lives and their circle of friends.
I still remember Don quizzing me about early civilizations when I was young. I remember his curiosity, his intelligence, and his wonderful sense of humor. Those moments stayed with me because they showed the kind of person he was: someone who loved learning and sharing that love with others.
I also remember the stories and images from the times when my parents, Don, and Janet would gather together, celebrate, and travel. I can picture those old home movies and photos of our families enjoying life together. It is clear from those memories, and from hearing about Don’s life, that he brought so much warmth, wisdom, and laughter to the people around him.
Reading about Don’s remarkable life, his dedication to his family, his work, and the many communities he served, it is easy to see the impact he had on so many people. Most of all, the love and devotion he shared with Janet for 74 years is a beautiful legacy.
Please know that my thoughts are with you today. May his memory be a blessing.
With deepest sympathy,
Betsy Galper
