LARRY SOLOMON, age 79, suddenly passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Larry was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Dorothy and Albert Solomon and lived in the Hill District and Squirrel Hill. He attended Allderdice High School, class of 1953, where he lettered in high school football, track, and baseball. Following high school, Larry attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and was a talented artist, focusing in painting and drawing. He joined the Army with service in Japan for two years of active duty and two years of active reserve. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant with an honorable discharge. He loved to talk about his experience working at Warner Brothers Theatres in downtown Pittsburgh in the Advertising/Publicity Department. Larry was the owner/partner of Medical Home Care Service, Inc. with his brother-in-laws Sheldon and David Rose. Larry became involved in youth soccer organizations when his son, Brett, had an interest in soccer. He founded Pittsburgh Dynamo Youth Soccer Club in 1981, for which he led for six years as President. Larry obtained his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) "D" level coaching license and became a coach for Dynamo leading the travel teams, Pittsburgh Maccabi soccer teams and at the International Maccabi Games.  While coaching, Larry also became increasingly involved in soccer refereeing. He was a USSF certified referee for 25 years obtaining the highest level for referees in Pennsylvania.  He served on numerous soccer associations as a referee including a certified Special Olympics Soccer Official and 22 years as a PIAA referee. Not only did Larry coach soccer, but he loved to play the game.  He played Amateur Soccer with the Pittsburgh Dynamo over-30, 40 and 50 leagues. As a natural leader and expert in youth soccer programs, Larry soon rose to the PA West Soccer Association President for eight years. He chaired numerous committees and traveled across the country to attend youth soccer workshops and conventions. For many years, he volunteered as an Airport Ambassador at the Greater Pittsburgh Intl Airport assisting travelers to and from their gates. While soccer was his passion, his real love was family. He cherished his son and daughter in law, Brett and Sheila, but especially his granddaughters, Aly and Paige.  Larry attended nearly every one of their soccer games, school performances and activities.  When they were very young, he would keep a stroller and snacks in his car trunk, just in case he would pop over for a visit. Weekly Sunday dinners were the norm for Larry and his family. Larry also adored his sister, Barbara as well as many nieces and nephews who he'd tease at a moment's notice about one thing or another. Larry is survived by his son Brett (Sheila Roth), granddaughters, Aly and Paige Solomon, sister Barbara (Sheldon) Rose, Janet (Bob) Grobstein, Francine Rose, Alan (Eileen) Rose and numerous nieces and nephews. Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel Inc., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside on Thursday April 23, 2014 at 11 AM. Visitation one hour prior to services (10- 11 AM). Interment Homewood Cemetery, Star of David Section. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pittsburgh Dynamo Soccer, PO Box 8217, Pittsburgh, PA 15217. www.schugar.com.
